Special Occasion Design was recently featured on the Swanky Press blog. The pirate party blog post was so cute I decided to do my own take on it! You can read the full article over at The Swanky Press.

This set up immediately caught my eye! What a wonderful idea to make each table its own pirate ship.

Valentines Day with DIY Rose Pomander instructions

Special Occasion Design is gearing up for Valentines Day with a special pre-day party. We chose to decorate in red and pinks for this occasion.

The dining table and buffet were decorated in a ruby red tablecloth, pink napkins and silver chargers by Special Occasions East of Grand Blanc, MI. The center of the table is decorated in a pink and white damask runner available at http://www.spoccdesign.com/ ($20) and a DIY rose centerpiece.

We decorated the buffet to match the table setting with a ruby red linen and damask runner. We also added a DIY rose pomander to this table, which you can read how to make below.

Arent these adorable! These cute valentines day cake pops were the hit of the party. Available from Cooke Confections in Linden, MI.

The party was alot of fun and enjoyed by all of Special Occasions employees and families. Hopefully this inspires you to host your own Special Occasion.

DIY ROSE POMANDER INSTRUCTIONS:

What you will need:

2 rolls of colored paper streamers ( I got mine at the dollar store)

hot glue gun

glue sticks

3" styrofoam ball (you can choose any size)

Start by cutting a strip of paper streamer about 24" long. You will want to vary the length each time to make different sized roses.

Fold the paper over about 1/3 of the width the entire length of the piece.

Next you will want to start at one end and roll the paper into a rose between your fingers. Its best to twist the paper once in awile to get a more realistic look.

You will want to add a small dot of glue at the end when you finish to keep the rose from unraveling.

Next add glue to the bottom of the rose and affix to your styrofoam ball to cover.

Once you cover the entire ball, find a nice vase to display it on and your done! I also added ribbon to the base of my vase for a finished look, however you can add rocks or anything that inspires you.

Spring Cleaning

With the weather being so unseasonably warm so early here in Michigan my body has already geared up for spring cleaning! I decided to start in my workspace, since this is the area that upsets me the most if it is disorganized.

However, before we begin. . I must confess that I am a fabric hoarder. No matter if I have a use for it or not. . If I see a fabric that I like I buy it! So as you can imagine I have alot of fabric laying around.

I wanted to take a before picture to show you the improvement, however I was just to embarrased to let you see how out of control it has gotten. :) So here is the "after".. . you can use your mind to picture the "before".

Neat and organized, just how I like it! Ok. . now heres how I did it for you other fabric hoarders out there.

First, I purchased comic book boards. They come in a pack of about 100 boards for $10.00. I used 7 1/2 x 10 1/2 boards, but other sizes will work too. I purchased mine at a local comic book store, but you can also order them on amazon for around the same price here .

Next you want to lay your fabric out with the selvedge edges together and fold up to get to your desired width.

Second, place your board on the fabric and roll it up to make your own mini bolt!

Then all you need to do it line them up in a bookshelf or storage unit and voila! Instant organization!

I am now ready to get back to designing guest books and other event items. Enjoy your spring cleaning :)

Ice Cream Social

It is only January, however the planner in me is already thinking towards my daughters birthday this summer. Every year her birthday turns into an outlet for my need to create and design.

Since her birthday is in the hot month of July, I was thinking an ice cream themed party would be perfect. Not to mention all this fab stuff I found browsing around on Pinterest and etsy!

I just love signs! Anywhere you can incorporate personalization into a party helps to make the event all the more memorable.

All of decorations are cute and all, but my favorite part of any party is DESSERT! For some reason I always tend to go overboard with sweets, sending the kids home to their parents acting as wild childs :) My daughters birthday party last year we rented a cotton candy machine to make pink cotton candy for her Barbie themed party. Not to mention the 8 ft. candy and sweets table to go along with it.

This year I think I will go this route for my candy table. My sister is a pro at making cake balls. . so I will have to beg her to help me make them since I am not so crafty in the kitchen.

And after all the hard work I put into creating such a special day, I want to remember the details forever. With my children being so young, they will not have any idea all the fun mommy had planning their parties. Here is the perfect way to keepsake a perfect day. . . a cupcake themed party book. The party book has pages to record who came, what gifts were received (making thanks you cards easier) and also to store photos from the day or cards.

After all is said and done. . and everyone has eaten enough sweets to put them into a coma and the decorations have come down, you can bring the memory back to your guests with theme related thank you card. I found these on etsy as well.

Congrats to Andrew + Ashley :: Grand Rapids, MI

We were so excited to see Andrew and Ashleys green wedding. The soft colors create a light-hearted and clean look for a nice evening.

The floral decor was designed by Floral Sense using chartreuse pomanders from (yup, you guessed it!) Special Occasion Design.

Floral Sense mixed 13" pomanders with 11" pomanders to give dimension to the room. They also used smaller pomanders hanging on ribbons to line the walk down the aisle.

Tips to Choose Perfect Wedding Linens

Table cloths can be used to make your reception room special. This is the one cost you don't want to skip out on! Using chair covers, table linens and linen napkins will help to bring a finished look to your event and makes even a budget room look better.

The first thing you want to consider when choosing your linens is your table size. Most venues provide round tables, but you may want to ask about rectangular tables for a non-traditional look. Count the number of chairs your table will allow, this will help your linen consultant know the proper sized linen to provide to you.

The next thing you will want to consider is what length linen you prefer. Linens are normally available in either an overlay, which is a short table cloth that covers only the top of the table with a small overhang, or a floor length linen. For formal affairs I recommend going with a floor length linen. The overlays are better suited for an accent color. Most venues only provide a white poly overlay for your tables, so be sure to contact a local linen company for options or ask your venue for names of a reputable company.

Once you decide on your colors and table linens you may next select a chair cover to match. Many companies now carry chair covers in several colors and designs, not just black and white! Chair covers also come in many sizes, so know what type of chair you are working with prior to meeting with your consultant. Banquet chair covers will not fit a folding chair!

Finally you will want to choose a sash color to coordinate with your linens and ask what styles of ties are available to set your event apart. Your consultant should be able to show you a few different styles to help you find one that catches your eye. Be sure as well to ask about renting napkins as many venues will not be able to match the color of your linens resulting in a kaleidoscope effect.

My New Adventure

Lately I have been asked by several brides if I could make them cardboxes. It was a product that I had not yet offered. The guestbooks and accessories have kept so busy that I really had not had time to create. However, I decided to go for it. I am super excited about this new category that I am now offering to my brides. . custom made cardboxes!!!

This box was made in a hot pink poly shantung fabric that I love because it has such great texture for a solid fabric. We accented in orange with a bow and ribbon. This box would also look super cute with some gerber daisies and polka dots :)

I got a new camara!

I just bought a professional camara for my business and LOVE it! It is a EOS REBEL XS Canon. Cost a pretty penny, but well worth it!

Spring is in the air and Love is Blooming! My favorite season. But more than just being my favorite season because the sun is shining and the weather is warming, spring is the beginning of wedding season.

Thank you for joining us here at Special Occasion Design. I have been planning weddings for the last 4+ years and enjoy every moment of it. After having my first daughter Lily, I began an online wedding boutique to sell high quality customized wedding favors and accessories.
